My goal as a teacher is to encourage a love of music and performing in my students. Working with individual students, my first objective is to find an appropriate pace at which to work, and then it is to set different short-term and long-term goals. I always try to get to know my students well, because I believe that when a teacher and a student have a good relationship, lessons become stress-free and goals become better tailored to the student. I believe strongly that passion is infectious, and is key to my teaching. I ask all of my student to set realistic goals and treat our progress as a journey in which we will gradually pick up the skills to grow with steady work. This comes from enjoying the “artistic process” and can only be discovered when we move together at a pace that is comfortable for the student. The only requirement I have for any budding musicians is that we both be open-minded and willing to listen using our ears and mind (this goes for me too!). Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 8 years ago, teaching primarily young beginning and intermediate students. I have served as a teaching assistant for the 2016 Ervin Monroe Summer Flute Choir Workshop, where I played side-by-side with the members of the flute choir and offered advice and guidance. I have also served as the the primary flute instructor for the annual McCourts Music Fifth Grade Instrument Fittings in Berkley, Michigan for the past 5 years, where I work with fifth grade students teaching them how to play the flute. My lessons vary from student to student, but are generally comprised of two parts. The first part involves working out a method book or classical etude book, depending on the level of the student. I believe that working out of a book is a great way to cover many of the fundamental bases of being an instrumentalist, such as reading music, developing technique, developing a good sound, playing with good rhythm, etc. Read More

In regards to teaching, I have been employed by various music schools in the New York City area, teaching flute to children and adults. My students have received accolades, and high scores from levels one to five in the NYSSMA Competitions. My experience in various venues, from one on one to group sessions, has honed my teaching skills, and has made me an astute, dynamic, and inspiring teacher that is flexible, and attuned to the needs of each and every student. I also made connections when relevant to our school-wide Words of the Week and K.I.N.D. Kids Program. It allowed me to team teach and model this instructional practice with teachers. Somewhere in the middle of this reading odyssey I became introduced to what is known as the Proficient Reader Research. I read and studied Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Keene and Susan Zimmermann as well as other advocates of this applied research such as Miller, Harvey and Goudvis, and counterparts in best practices in writing instruction such as Ruth Culham.
