My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 8 years ago, teaching primarily young beginning and intermediate students. I have served as a teaching assistant for the 2016 Ervin Monroe Summer Flute Choir Workshop, where I played side-by-side with the members of the flute choir and offered advice and guidance. I have also served as the the primary flute instructor for the annual McCourts Music Fifth Grade Instrument Fittings in Berkley, Michigan for the past 5 years, where I work with fifth grade students teaching them how to play the flute. I am a passionate educator and performer from the greater Boston area.  I love to see my students succeed and achieve their musical goals.  My students have gone on to the college level at University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and University of New Hampshire.  At the undergraduate level, I played with the UNH Wind Symphony and the UNH Symphony Orchestra for three years.  I have had two full solo recitals at UNH, and I have had the opportunity to be recorded on the Wind Symphony CD: The Music of Daniel Bukvitch.  Upon graduating with two degrees I moved to New York City. I strongly believe that all students are capable of learning an instrument and while there are some basic tenets to learning music, every student has their own style of learning in terms of pace and physical ability. It is up to me the instructor to find the best way to present the lesson. My teaching style is characterized by creating a relaxed and fun environment where my own passion for music helps inspire the student. Read More

Because I feel like you can't learn technique without musicality, I think it is important to begin with that in mind and apply the skills we learn in the method book to the piece and visa versa. Some of my favorites are the Trevor Wye: A Beginner's Book of the Flute (there are 4 volumes), as well as the succession of Louis Moyse Flute Series beginning with Forty Little Pieces (these are in progressive order). For my students, I like to make sure that their experience learning music is fun and enjoyable, but also rewarding. I want to make sure that anyone studying with me is having a fun time, but also learning good habits. It is very important to learn how to warm up properly and also how to correctly play your instrument. I try to find out what the student is interested in and what motivates them and guide my lesson accrording to the level of the student. Read More

Instruments: Flute Piccolo

As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Organize your practicing before you actually pick up the flute. Know what you will work on every day, how much time you will spend on each excercise, balance it out with your etude or piece and stay focused on your goal when you start your practice session. The musician you are in your practicing is the musician you become in the lesson and on-stage. Keep it simple, substantial and powerful.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I would say that for a wind instrument a good age would be 10+ years old. Unlike string instruments and piano playing the flute being a wind instrument needs one to have some respiratory build up before they can start.

When will I start to see results?
Every person learns in different ways and at different speeds. However, I would say that it usually takes a month more or less for the student-teacher chemistry and connection to establish itself and therefore for one to be able to notice major break-throughs either in the form of breaking bad habits or developing a new skill-set.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I would have to say that the trickiest part of mastering the flute is the breath. It's the most fundamental but the most abstract part as well since it happens inside the body. We can feel it but we can't see it. Therefore we have to use helpful imagery and develop an intuitive relationship andsense of trust with it. It can be challenging to master the one thing - breathing , that gets affected first when one gets stressed, afraid or experiences any kind of intense emotional state. However studens will learn in my lessons techniques with which they can quickfix any issue that comes up in regards to breathing as well as return at a desirable state of free, relaxed breathing that is what is crucial to flute-playing.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Music does run in my family from my mother's side in fact most of my relatives play an instrument. We have a clarinetist ( my brother), four string players and one pianist. Most of them are current members of the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki , professional musicians and one is pursuing a big piano career in Vienna.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I choose the flute because I loved to sing from a really young age and was in fact too young to start taking voice lessons, so at the age of ten and in watching Disney movies my parents noticed that I kept humming melodies played by the flute in each soundtrack. My mother has a strong background in music and so one day she asked me if I would like to give flute a try..and after listening to a few recordings I got a student flute and started taking flute lessons by one of the top teachers in Greece. I believe I was 10 years old at the time.
