You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More

My first experience teaching began in 2014 when I began working marching band camps as the flute tech. I was responsible for helping the students learn marching fundamentals and drill for the show, in addition to running music related sectionals with the flute section daily. I started teaching privately in the fall of 2017, teaching middle school and high school students. At NYU, I am an Adjunct Flute Instructor teaching non-music majors flute lessons, and have had a wide range of students at NYU - beginners all the way to advance players. Read More

I like to get to know my students before real in depth work can begin. Why are you interested in music? Why flute specifically? What other activites interest you? etc. I ask these questions so that analogies can be made to show how most things apply to all interests. Practice techniques in sports are similar to those in music for example. Knowing a student's personality outside of music also helps when setting goals, such as what to work on specifically in each lesson, what they are working towards in their own practice, and what future plans they have for music. My main priority is always create my lesson plan around the students' goals and motivations. Learning how to play an instrument requires time, patience and discipline, that's why it's so important for the students to stay motivated, and enjoy the classes and the practices at home. For this reason I always try to adapt the methods and repertory that I use in my classes, to the the students' personal needs, combining their personal taste in music with exercises and pieces that help to improve their performing and technical skills. For a young child to love music, a teacher must introduce it to him or her in a passionate way, without forcing it one the child. The struggling student is just as capable of loving music, just as much as the accomplished one. As I mentioned earlier, all students learn at different paces, so I teach each student as close as humanly possible to their level. It is not important for a child to play like a professional musician, but to play like the student has put his or her heart into learning the music. Read More

My teaching style is enthusiastic. I always show my students support, even if they are feeling discouraged. If there is a problem one my face in their individual practice, I am diligent in problem solving in our lesson. I work with my students to find small scale goals to work towards, and when they reach them, we find a new goal together. Whether it is playing a chromatic scale, learning vibrato, or a tricky run in a piece, I acknowledge and celebrate for them. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
