I graduated from James Madison University where I studied with Carol Kniebusch Noe, played four years in the JMU Flute Choir and in the JMU Wind Symphony. My teaching style is very analytical yet engaging! I try to establish a good relationship before pushing a student. At that point I will ask the student to play to the best of his/her ability. I teach in a style that helps children isolate problem areas, so that they can practice specific excerpts they are struggling with. For absolute beginners, I typically start with some of my own written exercises paired with various books, such as Trevor Wye's "Beginning Flute." At more advanced levels, I encourage my students to work with a program called SmartMusic. SmartMusic has a vast collection of music with accompaniment and other practicing activites. When it comes to teaching, I like to tailor each lesson to what the student needs, and that may be slightly different for each person. I find duets are a great way to get better at sight reading and improving tuning, so I usually bring a level appropriate duet or two to each lesson.
