In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. Instruments: Flute Piccolo
I typically begin with an age appropriate method book, supplemented by customized materials I create for each student. The initial focus is on FUNdamentals and understanding basic music theory. As soon as appropriate, I begin to incorporate solo literature selected by the student as well as provide assistance with any school band/orchestra assignments. Lessons are a great way to explore ALL different types of music! Read More

For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, since it is commonly the book used in middle school bands. From there, I transition the student to solo repertoire by finding/transcribing music that the student enjoys before introducing appropriate more formal solo repertoire. I also begin teaching students basic music theory and slowly start to introduce more advanced techniques, such as vibrato and double-tonguing. It is also important for me to ask students about their goals and interests when structuring their lesson curriculum! Read More

It is my goal to customize the lesson experience for every student that I teach. Most beginners benefit from a method book, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, which is a good starting place for most students. As students progress on their instrument, I choose the method books and solos that will best help them develop their talents as well as keep them engaged in the material. During my years on the flute, I have used a wide variety of methods that I have found successful for different techniques, so I can effectively select what material will help each student become successful. I love being able to send students on their way for the day knowing that they put their best foot forward. Even if they did not come to a lesson prepared, being able to see growth in the small amount of time I'm with them is enough for me. I understand that every student progresses at their own pace, so I work with them and their parents to make sure that realistic goals are set and written down to hold the student, parent, and myself to this growth plan.
