I am a passionate teacher with more than 15 years of experience. I work as a professional flutist and composer and am comfortable teaching flutists at any level at my home studio in Bethesda. I have a Master of Music in flute performance from California State University, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts in music from Humboldt State University. For younger beginning student I prefer to use Essential Elements for a good foundation. For older beginners I prefer the Rubank Method. Once the basics are grasped I add in level appropriate solo music. As the students progress I move either into the Rubank Method for younger students or the Trevor Wye method for the older students. My teaching style is very analytical yet engaging! I try to establish a good relationship before pushing a student. At that point I will ask the student to play to the best of his/her ability. I teach in a style that helps children isolate problem areas, so that they can practice specific excerpts they are struggling with. As an professor, the educational development of each student will always be a priority, but as a musician I recognize that there are activities that can facilitate this work, such as collaborations between different students to perform chamber music, collaborations between the student and the teacher to play musical duos during lessons, among other activities that keep the student interested and curious at all times. My lessons are individualized and tailored to meet the individual student's musical goals, level and learning style. I provide each student with a practice sheet to monitor their progress.
