A native Washingtonian, tenor saxophonist Brian graduated from the prestigious Duke Ellington School of The Arts, a product of master teacher and musician Davey Yarborough. He earned his BFA from The New School University in New York City, studying under Arnie Lawrence, Steve Neil, Charles Davis, Reggie Workman and Chico Hamilton. In 2008 Brian completed a Master of Music (MM) degree from Howard University where he was a graduate teaching assistant and student of saxophone virtuoso, Charlie Young. Among others, Brian has performed with Curtis Fuller, Gil Scott-Heron, Shirley Horn, Stanley Turrentine, Stanley Clarke, Mickey Roker, Butch Warren, Freddie Redd, Tom Abbs & Frequency Response and currently plays with Tomas Fujiwara and the Hookup. I started tutoring students on the flute at a very young age and have done it off and on since then. I like to play with students and encourage performances and help with competitions. When I was in school, I competed in solo and ensemble competitions and also performed in All-State Band and other honor bands. I have performed with concert bands, orchestras, ensembles, and marching bands. I love all kinds of music and find a lot of satisfaction in helping students understand the beauty of the flute. My teaching style is based on an open system, which allows the student to express their ideas and concerns about the topics covered in each lesson, in order to build the educational strategy that can best benefit the student. As an professor, the educational development of each student will always be a priority, but as a musician I recognize that there are activities that can facilitate this work, such as collaborations between different students to perform chamber music, collaborations between the student and the teacher to play musical duos during lessons, among other activities that keep the student interested and curious at all times. I like using flashcards, so students can quickly develop their site-reading. I use different techniques that meet the individual capacity of the students and adults. For intermediate and advanced students I prefer scales, etudes (exercises), sonatas, concertos and solo pieces of their preference. I like to play duets with my students and that is usually their favorite part as we can combine talents to play something beautiful. Blythe recently relocated to Maryland, but she has also taught in New York, New Jersey, and Tennessee, as well as internationally, in Egypt and Costa Rica. She has taught privately, worked in public schools at the secondary and elementary level, taught in community music schools and arts camps, and has worked with various organizations that provide free music education to students in need. My teaching style is fun and engaging! In a typical lesson, I chat with a student for 1-2 minutes, go into warm-ups, drone work, technique, etudes, concert pieces, and sight-reading.
