For older and/or more advanced students, I like to create a balance of tone warm ups, scale work, etudes, and musical rep. I encourage students to bring pieces they are interested in learning into their lessons. If a student is also interested in non-classical music (e.g. Disney tunes, Celtic music, pop, jazz, etc.), I find music in those genres at their playing level for them to enjoy. I'm a recent transplant to Brooklyn, NY after spending seven wonderful years studying and working in Boston! Originally from Gainesville, Florida, I first learned piano, then added saxophone, clarinet, flute, and bass in my middle and high school years. I went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston. In college I had the opportunity to direct and teach a community flute choir for adults. Currently I teach private and group lessons to high school students through the Boston Public Public School District. For all students, I encourage them to use Trevor Wye practice books, which include my favorite Reichert and Taffanel Gaubert exercises, warmups, and etudes. While learning the fundamentals, I have some beginner-level pieces and etudes to help hone these skills before students move onto more advanced repertoire. This, combined with gauging each student's skill level and needs, is the basis of my teaching style. I never use negative incentives with my students, as I believe that does more harm than good.
