Instruments: Flute

I began teaching private lessons when I was in high school. Since then I have gained more experience teaching privately and in group settings. In college I had the opportunity to direct and teach a community flute choir for adults. Currently I teach private and group lessons to high school students through the Boston Public Public School District. It is important to me to make sure my students are enjoying the work they are doing and have a say in the music they are learning while developing good practice tools. Read More

Instruments: Flute Recorder Music

My first teaching experience was teaching group recorder lessons in my home town, since then I have taught all over the world in many different systems. I particularly love working with beginner flutists and helping them to find their voice on the flute and discover the joys of playing. If a student is young I often suggest starting on the recorder in order for them to develop their skills and prepare them for switching to the flute later. Read More

Instruments: Flute

When teaching such a specialized topic as the flute, I cater to specific needs of that particular student by bringing out their strengths and providing consistent and genuine positive reinforcement. I use method books such as Trevor Wye, Rubank, and Anderson etudes, depending on the level of the student. In addition to those, I also provide some of my own materials such as scales, fingering charts, and pieces. Knowing that each student will learn at different paces and levels of energy, I balance technical elements with musical ones by having them coincide as much as possible. Read More

Instruments: Flute Piccolo Music

For all students, I encourage them to use Trevor Wye practice books, which include my favorite Reichert and Taffanel Gaubert exercises, warmups, and etudes. While learning the fundamentals, I have some beginner-level pieces and etudes to help hone these skills before students move onto more advanced repertoire. I like to guide my teaching according to the styles and composers that students are interested in to ensure that my students enjoy what they are playing first and foremost. Read More

Instruments: Piano Flute Piccolo

Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment.  I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students.  My goal is to always have the students improve.  To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Excercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level).  Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way.  Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them.  Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same.  I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson.  As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing.  Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear. Instruments: Flute Piccolo

I strive to help my students find joy and confidence in their flute playing. This means treating each student as an individual, recognizing that each student may have different goals and learning styles, and teaching and planning lessons accordingly. I believe strongly in teaching from a place of encouragement and empathy. Lessons are a safe space for students to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. By pointing out what students are doing well and providing tools to help them practice and improve, I aim to empower students to enjoy growing as flutists. Read More
