I work together with my students to create realistic goals for growth and success. I believe in having high expectations for my students because I love seeing growing passion and love for something that is so important to me! I also make it a priority to create a safe space for my students to be able to communicate with me about goals and material. I make sure to try and get to know my students in order to help them grow as much I possibly can, to understand how each individual learns so I can create specific and individualized programs! The student decides how fast he/she will progress by practicing very hard, or by working at a more moderate pace. Once again, I always participate in the learning process, as this method of teaching will enhance the private lesson, and a mutual enjoyment and respect will develop! The student must convey to me what he/she desires to focus on, and there will be a "win/win" situation which is always preferred. Read More

I have developed my own system and materials for introducing the fingerings and reading music in a methodical way. I write my own simple exercises and songs. I use the Wagner book and a duet book, and appropriate solos depending on the interests of the student. I customize the lessons and go where the student's needs and interests are. Popular songs can be good as solos, and some studnets really enjoy playing Handel, Telemann, and Bach. Read More

For my beginning students who are children, I may start them with Hal Leonards Essential Elements and/or the Rubank Method. Once they begin to learn the basics and and can grasp the fundamentals, I can begin to introduce solo pieces. For adults, I try to learn about what level the student is and what their interests are so that I can cater my lessons accordingly. Again, it is important for children and adults that the learning remain fun so that they want to practice each day! Read More

For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies.  My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue.  For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire.  This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers.
