Once they begin to learn the basics and and can grasp the fundamentals, I can begin to introduce solo pieces. When working on a solo piece we will look at it as a whole, go over any terms or passages that the student has questions about and then work in sections as well as addressing the entire piece and the musicality of how to approach and play the piece. In addition to working from the popular school method books and any band music I will assign different things for my students to work on to keep our lessons fun and engaging. Improvisation and expression are key points I like to emphasize in all my students, as anyone can sit down and practice scales until their fingers fall off, but being able to express yourself through a musical instrument takes dedicated work and direction. My first true teaching experience happened around the age of sixteen, which was by tutoring my siblings friends and preparing them for NYSSMA. I found this to be a truly enjoyable experience and realized that this was a passion that I wished to pursue in the future. From there, I enrolled in several music education courses when I attended Berklee College of Music.
