Each student is a unique individual. No two students are the same, nor will any lesson be. I use positive encouragement and reinforcement when communicating to my students. This means identifying what they might be doing correctly, as well as what needs improvement in a supportive way. My goal is to build confidence and self-esteem in their music and life. I look forward to being a part of their musical journey and hope to make it as rewarding as possible. Read More

I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. I have been on stage from the age of 3 and have spent my life learning more and more about music. I participated in a musical every year in high school and even won 1st and 2nd division awards at our Solo and Ensemble Festival. From there I went to a community college to gain some life experience. While there I was part of a paid show choir that acted as an ambassador for the college. Read More

I focus on the individual more than anything else. I tailor my teaching style to each student. When something clicks for them, I stick with it and adapt to keep the student engaged, interested, and passionate about music. If I find a student is not fond of a certain book or solo, we change course together. Sharing my passion for music is very important to me, and being able to do so with students is incredibly rewarding to both parties. I always go at whatever pace the student is comfortable with to keep their success rates high. Read More

For novice students, I will most likely start with a method book such as one from the Essential Element's series. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. Composing your own pieces and learning to improvise are extremely important in my method of teaching so I will also start teaching students how to write their own music as soon as possible. Read More

I started teaching when I was 16. I have taught small classes and private lessons for many years. I have developed a methodical system so that all aspects of flute playing are covered in a practical way that shows results from the first lesson. I teach so the student truly understand what they are playing - not just copying or playing by rote. I play for and with the student in duets so that the student can hear and be inspired by a beautiful sound and emulate it,. Read More

When working on a solo piece we will look at it as a whole, go over any terms or passages that the student has questions about and then work in sections as well as addressing the entire piece and the musicality of how to approach and play the piece. My goal is to not only help my students learn their instrument but also to help them to learn about and appreciate many aspects of music wich is one of the greatest joys of teaching. Read More
