Additionally, I like to work with scales and long tones in a more advanced way, expanding the range of the instrument and tone quality as we prepare repertoire. With students interested in jazz, either as their primary course of study or in addition to classical music, we focus even more on scales and arpeggios, aiming to master first the most commonly used keys and then expanding to 12 key mastery. I like to begin with a play-along book like Jamey Aebersold's "Maiden Voyage", stressing the beginnings of improvisation, then moving on to more advanced tunes and chord progressions. Read More

They had a tenor sax that they let me play and I was hooked! I made the top ensemble after my first semester and never looked back. I made region band every year after that and earned 1st divisions on all my ensembles and solos. I played 1st tenor in the jazz band in High School and started to think I could do this for a long time. I got a scholarship to UTA and marched with them for a few years while I concentrated on classical saxophone and studied jazz. Read More

I have found that the most effective way for me to teach is to activate the student's self-motivation, rather than trying to serve as external motivation. We will spend some time discussing the student's goals, whether they are concrete or abstract. I understand that many students have different styles of practicing! For some of my students, we ran lessons like they were drill sessions, and for others, the lessons were all about taking a deeper look into the piece itself and going through passages separately to personalize the performance.
