Finding what inspires the student is an important part of my teaching. With this information I can successfully tailor my instruction to the students desires and needs. I acknowledge accomplishments which helps fuel the students desire to progress and makes them eager to learn. It is important that the student progress at their own pace. I have been honored to teach and also prepare several students in my life. Some of them are today accomplished musicians, others are yet in music schools. For example I have 3 students already in Berklee and another student is in Juliard, NY. Other students, are non musicians wanting to learn saxophone and music. For beginning students I typically use Trevor Wye Book for Beginners along with Suzuki Book 1. Once sufficient progress has been made, I move on to the Marcel Moyse tone exercise as well as two octave scales and arpeggios paired with intermediate solo repertoire that focuses on tone development, musical phrasing, and musical style. This is all geared to prepare the student to perform with understanding versus pure technique. Clarinet: Any beginning band method book, Baermann, Klose, Voxman. At advanced levels I will use appropriate repertoire and advanced method books tailored to the student. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. I use those appropriate to age, goals, and learning style (for instance, chord methods are sometimes better for adults). Read More
