Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. For the advanced student, the focus becomes about fine-tuning fundamentals, and learning repertoire that will propel them forward to the next level. Read More

I use the Mark Thomas flute books for beginner through the 2nd year. In the first year, I typically teach basic fundamentals of scales and playing the full range of the instrument along with basic flute literature. Once these are complete I transition into the Anderson studies and more advanced literature. Additionally, I like to work with scales and long tones in a more advanced way, expanding the range of the instrument and tone quality as we prepare repertoire. With students interested in jazz, either as their primary course of study or in addition to classical music, we focus even more on scales and arpeggios, aiming to master first the most commonly used keys and then expanding to 12 key mastery. I like to begin with a play-along book like Jamey Aebersold's "Maiden Voyage", stressing the beginnings of improvisation, then moving on to more advanced tunes and chord progressions. Read More

I began teaching part time when I was in college. After moving to Dallas, I continued to teach part time while attending graduate school. Upon graduation, I began teaching full time during the day at public schools and evenings in my own studio.
