In high school I had the great privilege of being selected as the Principal clarinetist in the Minnesota All-State Band. We performed at the summer camp designed for these groups and recreated our performance at Orchestra Hall, home of the Minnesota Orchestra, the following spring. Clarinet is my primary instrument and first love. I also teach saxophone and beginning flute and hope to add other woodwinds in the future. I now reside in Keller, Texas and have opened my flute studio to online students and the Keller/Fort Worth area. For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. I have taught flute for 4 years to people of all ages -I have taught children, high school students, pre-college division music majors, college students and adult amateurs - students who have played in school and community orchestras, churches and for their own personal enjoyment. While I was attending the Conservatory we were also required to take several "method" classes that involved not only knowing the history of the instrument but the history of teaching the instrument as well as teaching the instrument in front of the Conservatory faculty. My methods of teaching are teaching what and how to practice. The basic ingredients in music are scales and chords and space. I am a firm believer of playing with a rhythm section from the beginning. Because of this, I use devices such as playing with tracks, myself, and other people. I provide audio and visual examples using recordings and videos. I believe that it is important to tailor lessons to my individual students, helping to foster a love of music and learning. I think it is important for my students to have goals that they are striving to achieve. They can be big goals, like making it into a college of choice, but I also think small ones are important, like mastering the Bb major scale.
