I believe that technique and musicality go hand in hand. I do not believe that one is more important than the other; instead, you cannot truly have one without the other. The most important aspect of playing music, is that, in and of itself, music! I like to foster an environment with any student where creativity and individuality are top priority. Especially with young students who are still self conscious, if they feel safe with their instrument in hand to create freely, I have no doubt they will be able to perform with greater ease later on in life. I have been teaching woodwinds for over 40 years, in my private studio in my home. I teach all levels of flute, clarinet, and saxophone. I specialize in personalized lessons, gearing the lessons to the needs and aspirations of the student. For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. I want recorder students to learn the 2 basic sets of fingering, since ensemble playing usually requires changing instruments. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for playing flute! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, always asking for their input so that the direction of their musical journey can follow their desires. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs, and help ensure they have the necessary tools and support to reach their goals.
