I approach teaching on an individual basis, meaning it's important to me to know the goals, hopes, passions, and if applicable, the worries or insecurities the student is feeling. In a first lesson I identify something that is special and unique about each student, and build their technique from this place. I find this helps the difficult areas feel a little less challenging because they already have something they feel proud of when working through the discomfort of something new or intimidating. My methods are based on what each student wishes to accomplish with these lessons. I have a wide variety of exercises/books/recordings that are guided to help the student reach their maximum potential. In particular, I specifically focus on sound, technique, reading, simulating performance scenarios, school auditions, recitals, and improvisation. I approach all these topics with care so that the student learns the most in a stress free environment. Read More

For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book. For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire. For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level. Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons. Read More
