As I have moved to New Jersey, I have taken on my own private studio. I have students ranging in ages 4-50+. For beginning piano students, I usually employ the Faber or Alfred Series books. They are intuitive and the various books (Lesson, Theory, Technique, Performance, etc) complement each other well! They also have an "older beginner" series that is great for teens and adults that are new to piano. I also encourage my students to try composition, even if it is very simple melodies. I learned how to format lessons, differentiate for beginner players, second year players, and third year players, how to fix lots of technical problems for all instruments, and how to assign and assess weekly performance goals. As I pursued my Master’s degree at Rutgers University, I took private lessons from Grammy-winning opera singers such as Eduardo Chama, all while continuing to sing and perform locally.
