From there, her music career quickly blossomed and just two years later at the age of nineteen, she found herself in the beautiful city of Boston, studying classical flute performance at the renowned Berklee College of Music. In pursuit of further enrichment, Anna Kate transferred to the Boston Conservatory two years later. The mentors she’s practiced under throughout her years are highly-regarded and sought after in the community, to name a few: Patricia Surman, Wendy Rolfe, Katherine Kemler, Mihi Kim of France, Heather Yarmel, and Ann Bobo of the Boston Pops. My approach to teaching is very interactive. I seek to provide my students with many different was to experience music including singing, playing, listening and analyzing. In this way, my students may make lasting connections with music and find success in many different areas of study. I, as well, strive to be the best example I can be for my students so that they may see musical possibilities which may not be presented to them otherwise. Read More

I love helping students succeed, and for them to feel a sense of accomplishment as well as having a good time while playing the flute. I try to make every lesson something exciting to look forward to, leaving them wanting to practice before every lesson, whether it be learning a new piece, improvisations, singing, or any new activities to mix it up. I consider myself as a guide, and not someone that pushes or dictates students. Read More

As such, I like to have students play around with making sound on empty bottles, and with tools such as the Pneumo-pro. As a big believer in scales as the building blocks of good technique and music itself, I provide basic exercises as early on as possible. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to use the first lesson as an opportunity to hear a piece or two that they've played before, then work on some of the things they've already learned so I can determine what sorts of ideas they respond to and what they can work on improving. My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. Read More

I've been playing flute for over 15 years and have taken advanced private lessons myself for over 8 years. In my own journey as a musician, I've realized the importance of regular practice time and setting short and long term goals. In my time teaching younger students, I've learned that locking down the basics of tone and breath control are crucial techniques for becoming a great musician. It's also important to have a good mix of repertoire between classical and modern/pop pieces. Read More
