For my beginning trumpet students I always make sure to start them off with a solid warm up routine. I start them off with long tones which helps them to establish a great sound. Building a great trumpet sound is necessary, and happens by creating a warm up routine the student can do every day. Typically, lesson plans are build around students goals. Some students may not have an interest in learning from a "traditional" approach from a book. Although this is highly recommended, I create different lesson plans for each individual student. I typically use and coach students from "Stick Control: for the snare drummer", "Syncopation for the modern drummer" and "The Blue Book" for drums. From time to time, I have also taught with "fakebook" charts for jazz drummers as well as play along tracks of various artists. Read More

Patience is the key. For the teacher and the student. There's no need to get upset or angry. Music isn't hard, bricks are. Music just takes time. If there's a section of the music that's challenging, I like to take it in chunks. By focussing on the first couple bars and once that's clean, we can look at the next couple bars.
