My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance. My teaching experience began in high school as a teachers assistant for a percussion ensemble class as well as helping with an after school percussion/hand drums club. I'm currently in a metal band, based in Portland, that tours every year. I also work as a session drummer for touring bands. The largest show I've ever performed was in front of 80,000 people at Wacken Open Air in Germany. I have been mostly a freelance teacher, but I have substitute taught many times at Musical Beginnings in Vancouver, Washington. My first instrument is drums, though I have also been playing and teaching guitar and ukulele for a long time. In church settings I have often had the opportunity to help younger and less experienced musicians find their place in the praise band or worship team and to learn how to play music as a part of a group.
