Hello! My name is Patrick, I'm a metal/rock drummer from Kodiak Alaska with 30 years of experience, currently living in Portland Oregon. Whether you're a beginner who wants to play along to your favorite songs, or if you want to learn double bass and drum fills I can help you realize your goals! I began in middle school playing in school band and have been committed ever since. I've found drums to give me a creative and healthy outlet through practice which transcends all aspects of life by leading a healthy and active life. Drums have taken me all over the world and have lead to many valuable friendships and experiences. I was lucky to have an incredible drum teacher as a child who taught me the most important rule: drums are cool! I have a 24 hour studio in North Portland as well as a home studio with multiple drum sets in the St Johns neighborhood.
My teaching experience began in high school as a teachers assistant for a percussion ensemble class as well as helping with an after school percussion/hand drums club. I'm currently in a metal band, based in Portland, that tours every year. I also work as a session drummer for touring bands. The largest show I've ever performed was in front of 80,000 people at Wacken Open Air in Germany. I have also had the opportunity to perform at two different castles, one being EXIT Festival at Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad, Serbia. The second being Brutal Assault at Josefov Fortress in Czechia.
I have a focus on rock and metal drums however can play and teach most styles. I believe drums need to be fun for a student to really enjoy playing and progressing, I can remember being a beginner and first "unlocking" independence between my hands and feet. I do believe the key is just to practice and find joy in that. Drums are one thing in life you can trick yourself into having fun exercising both body and mind as well as having something to be able to progress at, the only way to get better is to play, and playing is fun!
Drums aren't only an instrument to learn physically but there is a lot of philosophy involved. Knowing your place in a songs composition as well as how to fit in a collaborative group setting. I learn a lot of other peoples songs, sometimes very quickly, and can help break down step by step how to learn, remember and write drum parts. There are three main rules: 1. Drums are cool, 2. Drums are cool, and 3. Keep is super simple. If you're friendly, understanding and determined you can go very far, and at least you can unlock a real world hobby that is a healthy creative outlet.
