I start my beginning students off with learning to read music notation simply from a rudiment sheet and moving into a cd play a long book with basic drum rhythms and song structure. For intermediate to advance students, I typically start with Stick Control for the snare drummer by George Stone. For basic drum set we start with "The Rhythm Book" covering all drum set styles. If the student is interested in a specific genre and style of playing, we tend to travel down that road of goals they have set for themselves. Read More

It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others. My teaching styles are ever-changing but first and foremost I strive to meet the student where they are at in their musical journey, work in small chunks and learn to love the act of learning. Timing, technique, tuning, dynamics, timbre, music theory, writing, recording, listening improvisation (and more) are all crucial to being a modern musician but the most important of these is fun. If you aren't enjoying my teaching then I am not doing my job correctly. Read More

I remember being in grade school. I only wanted to learn things that interested me. One of those things was drumming. Since I was genuinely passionate about it, I had no problem working through hours of tedious practice to learn the skills I have today. I can still lose track of time while practicing. This is what is required to reach higher levels of any endeavor. My goal is to show my students why they need to practice what I'm teaching. Read More

For beginners, which is mainly what I've taught so far, I try and see what their goals are and teach them accordingly. Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show. The first, I taught using my own books that I have learned from, and the second I taught by just going through the song slowly, taking it apart, and learning it section by section. Read More

I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. For older advanced students I give a listening test to see where they are as a student then I teach accordingly. Read More

I am full of energy and love learning as much as I can, but I also understand that full and in depth skill requires time and a certain level of patience and consistency. I relay this to students by repetition (specifically of principles), though I keep it fun and exciting by varying the application. Once the principle is fully grasped, we move on. I also give light, yet fun x22homeworkx22 assignments to keep the student engaged and thinking about music outside of the lesson. Read More
