In addition to my teaching practices, I have conducted many clinics in the southeast region and have been on the Vic Firth Education team since 2004. Teaching is a way of life for me and I love to see students light up with enthusiasm when they have surpassed their own expectations. Read More

My methods to teaching beginners piano is very logical in that it the fundamentals I teach build upon each other. You can think of if like a pyramid. On the bottom of the pyramid we start with the notes of the piano. By the end of lesson one it is my goal for the student to know the name of every single note on the 88-key piano/keyboard. It's easier than it sounds and the students will find out that they can retain and learn more in one lesson than what they thought they could. Read More

I've learn that the most important part of educating my students is to teach to their learning style and ability while giving them some strong encouragement and guidance. I first start with an assements of where the students skills are and their mindset. I try to findout what they want to due and what they like to due. Sometimes students dont truly know. This is important for me because it sets the foundation for how the lessons will be planned out week to week. Read More

When I meet a new student, I ask them about their music tastes, as well as their perceived level of skill. This allows me to have a clearer picture as to which route to take with teaching. For students who are just starting their journey into music, I tend to bring material and resources from my own experiences and material. By starting from the basic language of music theory (scales, melody, harmony, etc) a solid foundation is formed for their curiosity to lead them to where they want to learn in music. Read More

For beginning students I try to go slow and make sure that they get the fundamentals and essentials down. My beliefs are that learning each stage well will help expedite the process of learning and playing later in life. At some point shortly after the fundamentals we will begin on solo literature and possibly duet literature. I always want to tailor my lessons to the student, so that they come away both a better musician and learning music that they want to play. Read More

I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. I have a variety of method books in different styles and from different time periods, and will select, assign, and provide a Method book to a student based on the student's goals. Read More
