For all students, I start off with the basic fundamentals. Proper setup, posture, stick position, and technique. I then will hand write some examples and assess the student. From there I usually will use Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Method. Once the student has a grasp on that, I will focus on rudimental drumming and snare rhythms to accompany the drum fill portion of the Alfred's book. From there we move into more advanced books that include jazz drumming and complex rock beats as well as learning popular songs of the student's choice. Read More

My teaching experience began in 2001, during an after school program. I facilitated a drum circle and taught lessons to kids from ages 8 to 15 years old. This lead to several parents of the students requesting private drum lessons. I have been teaching privately in student's homes over the last 15 years.  I find that defining the student’s goals, and centering the lesson around those goals keeps the individual inspired to progress forward. As their understanding of their limbs grows the more I begin to welcome actual musical notation. This system has proven time and time again to tackle the initial issue that coordination imposes. In intermediate to advanced students I stress the importance of technique, quality of sound, coordination, visualization, and relaxation/movement.
