I try to adapt my teaching style to however I see the student (or peer) is most effective in learning. Some people are more chart based, and like the bars written out in time so they can follow it in a more technical manner. Some have a hard time reading music, so they go off of feel. I focus a lot on the technical aspects of musicianship because I believe everyone has their own feeling that they bring to music and I want to give my students the tools to be able to express themselves in their own musical way. Practice is definitely important in order for students to get familiar with the instrument and different styles and I also believe that learning different styles of music tends to help students to get better at the ones they like to play.
