I've gotten pretty good at figuring out when the students get what I'm trying to teach. If I feel like I'm going to fast I'll stop think about what I'm doing and slow down. After the first lesson, I get my students the book "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" by George L Stone. I consider it essential for students to have great control of their hands and sticks before we really get to harder material. All lessons are taught with a metronome, and we up the tempo as we go.
