For beginning students who are young, I usually start with just a snare drum. Learning stick holding and striking technique, and then move onto adding pieces of the drumset to play on. From there, I go onto introducing learning note values, and drum music reading. For adults, I may start the same way, but also discuss what they would like to focus on. I try to adapt my teaching style to however I see the student (or peer) is most effective in learning. Some people are more chart based, and like the bars written out in time so they can follow it in a more technical manner. Some have a hard time reading music, so they go off of feel. I began playing drums in 1994. In 1999, I joined my first band, which was blues/funk/rock. We had a ton of fun, recorded two albums in the studio, won a bunch of contests, played Hollywood and countless local gigs. Since then, I have recorded two more albums with various bands and have massive amounts of stage time as part of a live group.
