Since, I have played for multiple different artists, on multiple major record labels. I have also worked with some of the world's leading producers, the men behind songs you hear every day on the radio, as a studio drummer and/or bass player. Artists ranging from Aly AJ on Disney Channel to spaced-out mixed symphonic electronica with Paul Oakenfold, the English DJ legend. I've found the most successful drummers can read well and play all styles. For beginning students, I generally introduce 'Syncopation' by Ted Reed along with 'Stick Control,' the PASIC 40 Rudiments, 'Alfred's Drum Method' for drum set, and technical exercises. For more advanced students, I like to use books like Rick Latham's 'Advanced Funk Studies,' David Garibaldi's 'Future Sounds,' 'Portaits in Rhythm' by Anthony Cirone, and 'The Art of Bop Drumming' by John Riley. This includes scales learned withing the Classical idiom as well as the Contemporary music idiom which includes all styles of music. Students regardless of their preferred style of music will be encouraged to learn some elementary classical music in order to facilitate and reinforce good technique, reading and interpretation.
