My teaching studio is equipped with two drums sets and practice pads to accommodate marching or drum set students.   I also have a full PA and two keyboards set up for piano students and accompanying purposes.  Each student is given an assignment for the week (or specified time) and will then pass off this lesson assignment (barrier) before receiving a new lesson.  Passing off not only includes demonstration of the lesson but also performing with me as I accompany them on the keyboards. I have over 17 years of experience teaching Band Choir on every level from Elementary to College . Prior to my appointment at Coppin State University, I taught High school for 14 years, Elementary and Middles school for 4 through out the state of Maryland. My teaching experience began back when I was a junior in college. I started working with 2 high schools in the Daytona Beach area in the marching arts as well as private lessons. Upon moving back home in the metro Atlanta area after graduating, I began doing various clinics for high schools in the Dekalb and Fulton county areas in preparation for the schools spring concert band festival. The most rewarding thing in my life is seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I believe it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace no matter what. I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson as the next lesson will be intertwined with the last. It is encouraging when students gain praise for their accomplishments. Ever since high school, I have enjoyed teaching other students. In college, I would travel to nearby schools to tutor middle and high school instrumental students. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. For beginning students I try to go slow and make sure that they get the fundamentals and essentials down. My beliefs are that learning each stage well will help expedite the process of learning and playing later in life. At some point shortly after the fundamentals we will begin on solo literature and possibly duet literature. I always want to tailor my lessons to the student, so that they come away both a better musician and learning music that they want to play. Read More
