For Beginners, I usually begin with very rudimentary stick control patterns to get used to how the stick feels in the hands. As the lessons progress, then I will instruct patterns on drumset if wanted. The student can request whatever style of drumming they would like to delve into, anywhere from latin percussion to jazz drumset. The experience I have teaching goes back to my time at the University of Colorado Denver, I enrolled in an Afro-Cuban hand percussion class, and in a music pedagogy(teaching) course. The music pedagogy course taught me numerous teaching philosophies and required me to teach lessons regularly with a student. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music.
