My teaching style is based around having fun while learning important techniques. Some students will pick up a technique or a piece of music in one week, while another might struggle with the same piece for a whole month, and that's okay! I will never force a student to move on from something they feel less than great about, and with that ideology, I believe students gain the confidence that is so vital to the creative process of music making. It is important to me that each student learns at their own pace when I teach. I dont want to force things upon students that they arent ready for, or dont want to do. Because of this, most of my curriculum is based around music of the students choosing, so they keep engaged and wanting to keep learning. Through this, I will teach the theory aspect of the music they are learning to help give a better understanding of why things work the way that they do, and the why the way they sound that way. For Bass and Guitar students I have written a progressive theory "test" which does 2 things - it tells me what the student knows and it serves as a guide in future lessons. Some theory instruction goes along with whatever playing instruction the student is working on. For Drum students I stick to the aspects of theory that pertain to the drums - meter signatures, note values etc. If a drummer wants to learn more then I can work with him on it. Read More

I began teaching private lessons in Chicago in 2002, while in an Educational Administration Masters Program at DePaul University. I quickly discovered the gratification that comes from sharing and teaching music. I've taught students of all ages and abilities and enjoy the variation in the lessons within this scope. I have taught in conventional school settings as well as from the road while on tour. I currently provide private lessons and group classes on several instruments, both at Swallow Hill Music in Denver, CO and to students worldwide via my website: JarettsJammers.com Read More

In our modern (distraction-filled) world, nothing is more rewarding than guiding my students toward developing artistry and intellectualism. Therefore, treating each student as an individual is paramount. Regardless of age or experience, my primary teaching goals bear improving a students abilities of cognitive function, problem solving, confidence, self-awareness, work ethic, artistry, and creativity through music. To accomplish this, I encourage the building of proper study habits to achieve personal goals. Read More

I adapt my methods to each student accordingly. Every person is unique and has a different taste in music. However I am strict in making sure that all my students understand the fundamentals of music. Ear Training, music theory, ability to read notation and tabs, understanding chords and voicing, how to count rhythms. I have a set list of songs I teach most of my students, as they help to develop technique and are usually well received by most students. Read More

With beginning students, and even with advanced students, it is important to first agree on a common vocabulary, and asses the level of fluidity in reading musical notation. Next are some basic written exercises to correlate notation and playing in the mind of the student. This initial theoretical tie-in allows for a more substantial expansion in understanding in the long term, as well as a strong basis for the development of one's improvisational capacity. Read More
