In my teaching I make sure that my students never feel overwhelmed or confused by the material.  I give them reasonable assignments based on their skill level and make sure to give them reasons for everything they are doing.  I always try to help my students achieve little accomplishments in every lesson. We then work towards those songs, in a step by step gradual process. Introduce something new each lesson, and juggle the "lessons" a little, until they settle. We sometimes work on grooves that are on songs the student likes, and would like to learn to play. I will break the groove apart and go over it together with the students. Rudiments and hand technique are important to have.
