For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts. When recording our demo (for a fellow students studio project), I took additional responsibility in our studio production. Before leaving college, I formed noise-rock outfit Robot Versus Dinosaur to explore performing purely-improvised music based on things Id learned from dance classes and live jamming. Graduation led to Philadelphia, where I interpreted pre-written drum-loops live for female-fronted pop band SubStatic. I then reconnected w/ step-brother to serve his MusicForHeadphones project for some 5 years, touring interstate and recording 3 albums, serving the project to focus on getting a Masters in Electrical Engineering at Drexel University, to research signal projecting, new forms of musical interfacing, and the educational potential of music video games. Every drum student is different so I customize each lesson to fit the particular students needs and goals. I always start out with fundamentals and rudiments on the snare drum, Focusing on stick position posture and proper technique. Once these basics are established we move onto a basic drum set method book covering notation, basic drumbeats and drum fills. From there we branch out into various styles of drumming, very often we move to jazz drumming from there as that is usually the first time students are offered to play drum set in their school music program.
