There is not a one-size fits all teaching method for beginners, or any playing level for that matter. Every student had different goals for what they want to play or what they want out of music in general. Bombarding a new student with drum rudiments and prescribed drum patterns (unless it is what they desire) can be very daunting and could lead a student to dislike drums or any instrument. Read More

It's always a great feeling to see one of my students successfully performing a piece of music that they have been working hard on. Sometimes a student may feel they are not progressing as quickly as they want to, but I always encourage the students that as long as they are progressing at any kind of pace, they're getting better. I always make sure that my student's are learning something new to keep them engaged. Read More

I have been coaching percussionists for the past several years as the music director for Groove, High Energy Percussion. For beginning students, it is absolutely essential to learn the basics. As each student grows and has fully grasped a better understanding of the fundamentals, the I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I have learned that every learner is different, so each person's lesson has to cater to their learning style. Read More

I also compose my own rhythmic exercises for my students. 2) sticking techniques, rudiments, paradiddles, posture, etc. This is of primary importance - without the write posture, sticking, or techniques your world of playing the drums are going to be a lot more challenging - and without it, youll look plain goofy. 3) Improvisation - Improvisation is also extremely important because you can only be a good improviser if you have a strong musical vocabulary.
