My teaching experiences started when I was in college, a fellow classmate of mine needed help with some of her younger students and the world of music education opened up to me from there. I have been teaching steadily now for 7 years, working with students from ages 5-55. I have taught group and private lessons in music studios, students' homes, or my own home studio. Students I have come across in time have come with a multitude of personality types, learning patterns and physical challenges. Read More

My approach to teaching is to make it a fun and positive learning experience that they look forward to and stay inspired. Patience, encouragement and understanding of where the student is musically are crucial. I like to emphasize the idea that nothing happens overnight, only through effective practice and repetition. Having this mindset, they will no doubt see results in no time. I always like to establish a goal for each lesson, suggest cool drum videos on Youtube and make sure the student feels like they are free to ask a lot of questions if they aren't understanding something. For beginning and young students, we always start with fundamental concepts - producing a good sound, developing a sense of rhythm and pulse, building music reading skills, and fostering good practice habits. Once these skills have been developed, we progess to working solo repertoire and ensemble music. As student age and ability levels increase, I like to give the student increased input in the direction of study. No matter what, we keep things interesting and engaging, and fun! Read More

I believe listening is the key to learning. I listen to my students to discover what techniques are working best for them and which are their weakest then adapt my lessons to their needs. I also try to teach students how to listen to music, hear the empty spaces in songs that really give them their polish, and how to listen for other individual instruments to understand whem to accompany instruments and when to give them their own space. For beginner students I like to keep to the fundamental elements of Jazz and Rock grooves while focusing on various time signatures. Another key practice we will always be refining on are the rudiments. This will keep those chops sharp for direct accuracy and speed. For my more advanced students I conduct a learning program based off the students interests in styles and advancements, doing so keeps the student engaged in the lessons with room to grow. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More
