My teaching experience began in 1980 while still in high school teaching private lessons. Since then Ive taught at Westminster Choir College, Rutgers University, NJ State and County Teen Arts Programs as well as private and group lessons in my own studio. My casual approach allows students the relaxation and freedom necessary to learn at their own pace. With a strong focus on fundamentals and using those fundamentals as building blocks, my goal is to help students become musical and creative and find their own unique voice on their instrument. For beginning students who are children, I typically start the first day with allowing them to perform what they have learned prior so that I can see where their strengths and weaknesses are. Afterwards, I will work on their strengths so that they feel confident to tackle on their weaknesses. Once the student has progressed in fundamentals, I will advance them to solo repertoires appropriate for their performances. As percussion does not consist of one instrument but of hundreds, methodology changes depending on which we are discussing. for anything requiring drum sticks (snare drum, bass drum, timbales, drumset), the fundamentals and rudiments come first. After all, you don't put someone on a motorcycle if they cannot first ride a tricycle. Rudiments are every bit as important on Drumset as they are just playing snare. The Advanced Student is not required to perform all the material for the next lesson, as long as he or she can demonstrate that the idea behind that particular subject matter is understood the lessons will move forward. My lessons are designed to transfer info to the advanced student so that he or she can design own studies after finishing studying with me. As for older teens, young adults and adults, I usually teach from the acclaimed method book: Hal Leonard’s Music Guitar Method. These books are structured from Volume 1 through Volume 3.
