My experience dates back 10+ years when I began to seriously learn to play the bass guitar. Since then I have studied music theory in high school and college, played in a range of Massachusetts based bands and orchestrated the pits for 4 on-stage theater productions at Framingham State University. I have been playing drums and guitar for 5 and 7 years, respectively. Read More

It really depends on needs and desires of student! I create custom lesson plans for each student depending on their current ability level, age, and future goals. For drums -topics include: various Snare books to teach students sight reading basics while focusing on technique, transcriptions of drum grooves and solos, learning and playing along to recordings, etc. For Piano, I combine a traditional note reading approach/music theory with the "by ear" Suzuki Method. I enjoy sharing my musical knowledge to students so they will advance in their musical aims. In 1983, I attended The Guitar Institute of Technology and studied privately with Frank Gambale, who formalized the single line "sweep technique" on guitar. While in L.A. I also studied with Ed Mann, longtime Frank Zappa percussionist and teacher at Cal. Arts. In Boston, I became assistant to George Russell on the revision of his 1953 copyrighted and published book "The Lydian Chromatic Concept Of Tonal Organization" released in 2001. Read More

I find that it drives the student to learn the instrument for himself. And as the student wants, more and more, to prove that he can "beat the instrument," he begins to work at it in ways that I can't teach. Learning an instrument is more than showing up for one hour each week. Practice is everything. I feel that my methodology encourages students to take on the instrument head on and learn how to solve problems on their own so that they can practice and improve more quickly. Read More
Instruments: Drums Orchestral Percussion
My Teaching experience really started just after graduating high school working with my School's marching band. Although this was not an official position until more recently, my time volunteering surrounded me with successful educators who I observed and learned from. A more recent teaching experience for myself was teaching the University of Maine's (Orono) marching band and percussion section. For one week I worked closely with the a group of 15 students developing skills in percussion while teaching material to be played at school football games. Read More

My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing. Singers who want to study jazz and improvisation use one or more of my pedagogical texts on scat singing. Read More
