Reading music is essential. To me musicians who don't know how to read music are like people who speak without undertsanding the meaning of the words they say. I also focus on ear training and understanding the instrument naturally, being that I feel its best for the player to have a mulititude of approaches to their understanding of their craft. I was blown away with his expertise and was encouraged by him to learn jazz. I believe practicing is important, but I do not believe assigning homework is an effective way to make music fun for a student. As previously mentioned, i do believe in the saying that the best you can do is good enough. I expect students to practice equal to the amount they wish to improve. How quickly or slowly someone grows on their instrument is often a simple result of time spent working. But making music is incredibly fun and i make every effort to keep the time spent doing the study fun.  For the drums i tend to buy into the philosophy that playing a first complete rhythm on the drumset as soon as possible, regardless of how basic it may be is important for keeping a student motivated. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace.
