Overview:
This year (2013), I am celebrating my 25th year of playing drums professionally and my 15th year of teaching. I have loved playing the drums and making music from the first time i ever grabbed a stick and connected with a drum. I have never wanted to do anything else with my life and i love sharing my knowledge about the power of making music and all the different ways that investing the time to learn an instument can pay off in a person's life. Music has allowed me to travel to 40 of the 50 states. I have played a part in writing, recording and releasing 12 records in my life and performed professionally over 1,000 concerts on a wide range of drums/percussion instruments. I have also been fortunate through music to meet so many wonderful musicians and people from almost every culture around the world which expanded my understanding of the world outside of whatever city I live in. I look forward to continuing to share all the skills and knowledge and advice that I have been fortunate to learn from so many great teachers along the way.
EXPERIENCE
My experience with teaching has been endlessly rewarding. I love to share what i have learned about music and how to play the drums in the most musical possible way. I believe drumming to be incredibly powerful and so healthy for anyone to get involved in. I also enjoy trying to discover what is unique about each student and how they learn which increases bith of our abilities to communicate verbally and through the language of music. I look to work with students of age or ability who are above all excited and interested in learning the instrument. Learning to play any instrument can sometimes be difficult or even frustrating, but through hard work and keeping the process fun the rewards for continuing to improve are well worth the efforts for both teacher and student. I always expect simply the best the student can do and believe strongly in the saying that the best you can do is always good enough.
METHODS USED
As previously mentioned, i do believe in the saying that the best you can do is good enough. I expect students to practice equal to the amount they wish to improve. How quickly or slowly someone grows on their instrument is often a simple result of time spent working. But making music is incredibly fun and i make every effort to keep the time spent doing the study fun.  For the drums i tend to buy into the philosophy that playing a first complete rhythm on the drumset as soon as possible, regardless of how basic it may be is important for keeping a student motivated. Although i have taught many students the way i learned which was only on one drum for the first few months to focus on rudiments (the fundamentals of drumming) as well as the skills of reading music and the various parts that make up good technique.      A couple of my tried and true favorite books to teach from are: Beginner: Haskell Harr Drum Method and Alfred's Drum Method Intermediate: New Breed by Gary Chester, Stick Control, and the classic Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed Advanced: Advanced Funk Studies by Rick Latham, Patterns by Gary Chaffee and  Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin
LESSON STYLE
Sharing the gift of drumming with students of any age and experience level is something i truly feel honored to be able to do with my life. Learning to play for me was very powerful and i have seen it become very rewarding and powerful for many students in many different ways over the years. My philosophy is quite simple. We're gonna consistently work hard and always keep it fun. I have taught in a more serious and rigid way before which does work for some students, but i think like anything in life, being able to enjoy the process week by week makes learning progress and a consistent and more rapid pace. There are many different possible ways to learn the drums and the other key to my approach is remembering and honoring the fact that everyone is unique and my job is to discover how you learn best and to continually look at what your goals are. After all, you can't get somewhere if you don't first know where it is you want to go.
