As a foundation, I start my beginner-level students with basic the basic understanding of rhythm patterns, dynamic control, and basic limb independence. I use Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming" as it has proven to be a fun and effective learning tool for well over a decade. From there it's really dependent on the student and their learning style/pace. I love being able to send students on their way for the day knowing that they put their best foot forward. Even if they did not come to a lesson prepared, being able to see growth in the small amount of time I'm with them is enough for me. I have numerous methods for progression but after some time, I always let the student's interests and goals lead the way. I'm trying to put each student in touch with their inner creative. Everyone learns at a different pace and my approach is to teach something to mastery level rather than fill a quota. Inspiration and the joy of playing is first and foremost with my approach. By breaking difficult passages down into digestable pieces and making attainable goals, I find this keeps the student interested and builds confidence to overcome weaknesses. Read More

I set goals for my students to achieve and once the basics have been mastered I open it up for them to decide. IF they want to be a performer I will work with them toward being a great performer. If they want to be a better technical player we will work on mastering techniques and continually challenging them, if they want to write their own parts we will work that way. Read More

Music is, and should be fun! It is also hard work, but when done right, these two go hand in hand. No one should leave a lesson feeling discouraged, personally or musically. This is why I work hard to understand what each individual student's goals are, and quickly assess how he or she may achieve those goals. Additionally, not every student learns the same way, and I strive to ascertain and respond to each individual's needs. Read More
