I think the most important part of teaching is developing a positive mentoring relationship to the student. My favorite teachers always went above and beyond to not only educate me on their favorite subject, but also to show me life lessons along the way and listen to my problems. Ultimately I know that not every one of my students will become a professional musician, and that is okay! When it comes to teaching piano I use the faber method. I like the combination of theory, ear training, and sight-reading that it offers as those are fundamental skills to be a good musician. If they are able to successfully complete those books, I go into solo repertoire and work on fingering techniques as well as reading music off a lead sheet as you never know when you want to play something and the sheet music is not available. I enjoy hearing the students natural abilities, understanding what kind of music pours out of them, acknowledge that, and from there we develop it. At the same time, direct the student with technique, theory and any other tools that will facilitate the music they are passionate about.
