My favorite moment is when the student hears himself or herself actually playing the beat or fill that I have been instructing. Reaching this point repeatedly keeps my students practicing and engaged in the process of learning drums. My teaching occurs both on the drumset and on the drum pad. I have been teaching for eight years, I have taught privately, in group settings, and with students of all ages. I have found that one of the most important things to have in a student teacher relationship is trust. If a student does not trust his or her teacher than they will be less encouraged to learn and practice. I have also found that building this kind of relationship will also help students to develop a love for music, maybe not in the way that I did, but in a way that is over all beneficial to their character and life philosophy. For my advanced and more focused students I let them set their own goals and then help them in every way I can. As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. I am a Latin Jazz vibraphonist and popular percussionist with a background in classical percussion. I also hold a degree from Berklee College of Music, where I have spent the last four years studying performance and production. Most recently I produced and lead a group based in New York and Boston.
