I value my student's love for the content they are learning. I seek to hear what students like to listen to and what music they enjoy, and using that information figure out how best to give listening recommendations and assignments. I hope that by allowing students to express themselves through the music they love, a strong relationship between the student and music can be cultivated for my student and me. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. I am a passionate voice and beginning piano teacher with over ten years of experience teaching. For beginner piano students I use the Piano Adventures curriculum. With voice students I use an integrated technique involving Alexander Technique, Yoga, and the Swedish-Italian School of singing. I also believe in maintaining a positive and challenging learning environment for my students. I hold a Bachelor of Music Education from Seton Hill University and a Master of Music from Duquesne University. Read More

I have also become an avid arranger, making arrangements of Broadway and Show Music for a classical ensemble. I love being able to cross the different styles of clarinet, and would love to teach students that have a desire to be a proficient player in any of those styles. When beginning lessons, we have a conversation about what the students' goals are, whether it be classical or other styles, and what they hope to accomplish (entering competitions, auditioning for programs, putting on recitals, etc.). For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested. Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. I work with my students from a method book, and then move to add scales, etudes, and repertoire as they advance. Additionally, if I start teaching an older student as a beginner, I believe it is important to teach them at their intellectual level. I never intend to talk down to my students, and I always strive to meet them where they are to raise their level of understanding. Finally, if students are interested in learning a particular song or want to focus on a particular topic, I am always eager to help them with that! Read More
