During the 2015-16 season, I completed a tour with pianist Amanda Zook (Cosme-Zook Duo), performing in New York City, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and Canada. These concerts were sponsored by Project 142 and themselves. As an educator, I teach at the Escuela de Música de Manatí. There I teach flute, flute choir, and wind ensemble. Also, I hold the teacher's assistant position given by my mentor Josué Casillas. Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. Growing up in a Communist Yugoslavia and then later in my twenties moving to New York City gave me a unique prospective of becoming a musician with wide spectrum of influences. After completing my bachelors degree in 1998 at UC San Diego, where I studied with ground-breaking improvisers George Lewis and Bertram Turetzky I moved to New York City and began teaching privately, as well as performing with a variety of groups, including: the Hungry March Band, the Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, Ansambl Mastika, Raya Brass Band and Sherita.
