For beginners, I show them basic chords (Major, Minor and Diminished) if they're a guitarist and if they're a bassist, I teach them octaves and basic waking lines. Once they progress, I show them common scales and chord progressions used in modern music and focus on developing technique. If they're intermediate to advanced, I ask them what they feel they need work on and we focus on that. In the first lesson beginner students get an overview of the piano, learn their first warmups, get an idea of what they should do outside of our lessons to see the most progress, and discuss their goals as a musician and pianist/clarinetist. I mostly teach from Alfred's Basic Piano Library All-In-One Book series for students of all ages and supplement with other materials as needed. Transcribing, and learning from transcriptions helps to learn to truly listen, to tune into all the subtleties of music, of sound, of phrasing. I often hear astounding improvisors who yet have to learn that music is always a shared experience, even if we are the soloist, there is always a musical fabric we are part of. Transcribing, and imitating are important tools for the students to create their own unique voice that is malleable given the specific context. Read More
