Though I have been teaching for over 16 years, I am far from feeling like a burn-out.  In fact, the more I teach, the more intrigued I become with the learning process, and I am constantly re-tooling my approach in order to help my students learn more effectiively. I LOVE teaching, and I have chosen to teach privately because I enjoy the one-to-one interactions with my students.  I can actually get to know each of my students, and I use my knowledge of each new student's goals, temperament, age and learning style to tailor each lesson. I studied music education, I needed training if I was going to understand how to pass on the skills I've acquired.  I graduated from Otterbein College in Columbus, OH in 1996, and I have been teaching privately ever since. I love to help students discover how they learn best, and rejoice with them as they master a particularly challenging passage, or access a new genre.

I am a huge music enthusiast, and love almost every discipline from classical to pop. I am primarily a classical pianist, and I have been taking lessons for about 10 years from an adjunct professor at Tulane University, but I also enjoy playing jazz/blues and pop. In addition to playing, I compose many of my own piano pieces, as well as create arrangements of popular songs and produce music electronically. My musical education at Tulane University includes music theory, advanced harmony, jazz theory, choir, and music digital sound processing.

I'm passionate about music and the guitar, and I strive to communicate and instill that passion in my students. I like my students to have lesson-to-lesson and long-term goals, and firmly believe in pushing my students to be the best they can be. I like to constantly ask my students questions so I'm more receptive to their thoughts and needs.

I have taught on and off for the last 6 years. I currently teach at a private studio a couple days a week in the afternoon since last August. Prior to August I have had students on and off in my home or at their homes. My experience has taught me that your best teacher is yourself. I can show you my methods, teach you theory and technique, but what is comes down to is find ways to stimulate yourself with practing. I suggest trying to play music with as many different type of instrumentalist as possible.

I begin with the fundamentals of music theory that you will need to begin playing your instrument, and then I like to get straight into learning songs as quickly as possible. The student may choose what songs to learn (recommended) or I can make suggestions. You will learn a range of skills including tuning, instrument care, song struture, chords, soloing, and MUCH MORE. My goal is for you not just to learn to play certain notes or chords, but also understand why that note or chord fits where it does. This knowledge will be key to your success in composition and collaboration.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
