I primarily use the Suzuki Method for my beginning students, especially the younger ones. As they progress, I incorporate etudes and technical studies to support what they are learning in their solo repertoire. As the student advances to more challenging repertoire, I gradually transition them from the Suzuki books to individual pieces that I help them select based on their level of playing. With my adult students, I usually begin the transition to a variety of repertoire earlier, based on their musical interests and goals.  I also incorporate fundamentals of music theory with all of my students in their lessons, because I believe that it is important and helpful for them to understand all of the elements of which the music consists.

Hi! My name is Peter and I love to play, compose and teach music. In 2013, I graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Certificate in Jazz Performance. And in 2014, I completed a Masters of Music in Jazz Trombone from Stony Brook University while studying with Ray Anderson. I have over 7 years of experience teaching students of all ages, and over 10 years of experience playing in symphonic orchestras, wind ensembles, chamber orchestras, big bands, and jazz combos. I'm currently pursuing music performance and education in New Orleans, LA.

There are so many different ways to approach music, and so many different avenues one can go down, which is why I prefer to cater to the students learning style and interests. I want to bring in a variety of approaches to the lesson such as theory, sight-reading, and ear training. A big regret I have as a student is not learning early on, the framework and inner workings of the pieces I was playing. Not until later, when I became interested in composition and began taking theory classes, did i understand this, and it led me to a deeper understanding of the pieces I was learning and greater enjoyment and fulfillment. I simply don't want students to feel limited as musicians.

Instruments:

I'm passionate about music and the guitar, and I strive to communicate and instill that passion in my students. I like my students to have lesson-to-lesson and long-term goals, and firmly believe in pushing my students to be the best they can be. I like to constantly ask my students questions so I'm more receptive to their thoughts and needs.

My teaching experience goes back 9 years.  Before I moved to Chicago for school, I lived with my parents in Springfield, IL and taught private drum lessons out of their basement.  Although I did not have a lot of experience teaching, I realized how rewarding it was to see a student learn and gain confidence on their instrument.  It was something that I wanted to do more and saw a future in teaching.  After I graduated from Roosevelt University I had more time outside of academics to start a teaching practice.  In 2011, I worked at Lynn Marcel School of Fine Arts in Hillside, IL. As a drum instructor I helped design a corruculum plan and taught younger students ages 8-14.  In 2013 and 2014, I worked at School of Rock in Oark Park, IL teaching drum set, voice, and piano for students of all age groups.  This was an interesting and new way of teaching for me because at School of Rock the students not only took private lessons, they got to perform in groups and played a recital at the end of each season.  Also in 2014, I worked at The People's Music School in Chicago teaching music theory and group drum lessons for kids ages 5-14 and class sizes of 30+.
