For all ages I like to begin with a skills test. Where they show me where they currently stand with their instrument. From there I refer to books by Trevor Wye to give students a strong fundamental basis in tone, technique, articulation, intonation/vibrato, and breathing/scales. From there the lessons would be tailored to where the student wants to go with their learning. My teaching style is firm yet easygoing and fun..I expect the student to have practiced and be ready to play their homework back to me. I use repetition quite a bit but that's the best way, I find, that someone learns. I also encourage them to investigate and practice things that have not necessarily been assigned in order to see how serious they are.
