Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. For all ages I like to begin with a skills test. Where they show me where they currently stand with their instrument. From there I refer to books by Trevor Wye to give students a strong fundamental basis in tone, technique, articulation, intonation/vibrato, and breathing/scales. From there the lessons would be tailored to where the student wants to go with their learning. I started teaching in my early 20's and have taught for over 20 years. Nothing beats seeing a student's reaction when they've learned something and can successfully implement it. It brings me a lot of joy! I also encourage and emphasize that my students get into or start bands to practice what they've learned to really see how jamming works. In the first lesson beginner students get an overview of the piano, learn their first warmups, get an idea of what they should do outside of our lessons to see the most progress, and discuss their goals as a musician and pianist/clarinetist. I mostly teach from Alfred's Basic Piano Library All-In-One Book series for students of all ages and supplement with other materials as needed.
