Howdy!I'm a musician and instructor with a relatively eclectic background, which, I hope, colors my expressiveness and pedagogy in interesting ways. I'm originally from Idaho, where I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. I came to Colorado five years ago to attend University of Colorado. The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student.
