I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. For adults and more advanced students, I like to steer the focus more in the direction of what they want to learn, while still teaching the proper fundamentals of the instrument! Read More

I think that it is very important to teach not just how to play an instrument, but also the fundamentals of how music works and why. I create custom lesson plans so that my students not only learn to play the clarinet, but also gain fluency in music reading and music theory. Although method books are helpful tools, I do not consider myself or my students bound to them and I work with each student and their individual goals in order to craft lesson plans that work for both of us. I began teaching private lessons 9 years ago, working with all ages and all levels. I am always aiming for the best balance between fun, discipline, technique and freedom. This includes my combination of fundamentals of technique, musical games, improvisation and focus training. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points! Giving students the right motivation and the correct point of view on the matter can not only change the level of musicianship, but can also change you as a human being. Read More

My teaching style is both rigorous and positive. I believe that the best way to learn any skill is through hard work and persistence in a judgement-free, positive psychological environment. I work in a routine every lesson so that students understand the next step in the process. I make accommodations for each student depending on their personal goals, needs, and learning styles. No two students are the same, so no two lessons should be the same. Read More

I am a recent graduate from NYU with a Master’s in Music Technology. I am hoping to start a career in the music industry or any similar field. I have been playing in multiple bands and orchestras since I was young, and have played at all levels. I have helped other or fellow musicians at places like Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts, where I was a music staff intern during one summer. Read More

Growing up in a musical family instilled a love of music as a child. My father was an accomplished jazz pianist and when I was 15 years old I began playing professionally. I had great teachers in my formative years, from my father, my band directors and to my private instructors, I learned that developing simple concepts to tackle seemingly complex ideas was the key to my success. I graduated from Texas State University in 2001 with a B.A. in Music Performance. Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More
